LHCb Masterclass

Students measure the D0 lifetime using data from LHCb, separating signal from backgrounds.

Students learn to search for charmed particles, fit functional forms for the signal and background to the data, obtain the distribution of events in a given variable by taking the combined distribution of events and subtracting the background distribution, and use the result of the fit to find a smaple of pure background events and compute the signal yied and purity. Use the signal which decays exponentially with time to measure the lifetime of the signal particle.
