Spotlight on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)

FF recently traveled to New Mexico to work with artist Agnes Chavez, Lakota cultural specialist Steve Tamayo, ATLAS physicist Steve Goldfarb and others to continue the development and implementation of a workshop known as Projecting Particles: Lakota Cosmology Meets Particle Physics. In this workshop, students explore the universe through the lens of Western and Native science, culture, and art. This workshop was recently held at the Taos (NM) Pueblo Day School on April 25-27 and at the Native American Community Academy in Albuquerque on May 3-5. Students learned about Native traditions and teachings, shared stories, built a tipi, learned about particle physics, analyzed ATLAS data, and used an app on iPads known as Tagtool to produce projection art inspired by Native culture and particle physics. Agnes has been doing Projecting Particles workshops since 2013 and is passionate about the inclusion of art in STEM to make STEAM. According to Agnes, "Art can be used to decorate your house, but it can also be used to explore and understand the world around you, for example, to try to visualize complex science concepts.” Check out Agnes's website to learn more about her work.

Physics Experiment Roundup

Construction begins on SuperCDMS SNOLAB experiment, expanding the search for dark matter to particles that have not been accessible to previous experiments. A recent ATLAS measurement searches for forces beyond the Standard Model. Learn more about the European Spallation Source (ESS), currently under construction in Sweden. Upon completion, the ESS will provide the most powerful facility for the production of neutron beams used for research.
