Spotlight on QuarkNet on the Bio-Bio

FF is in Chile traveling from Santiago south, taking cosmic ray data and doing masterclass-based student workshops under a grant from Notre Dame International. We have a team from Pontificia Universidad Catolica and Notre Dame. Armed with new Spanish-language particle cards and QuarkNet activities, the team has already visited two schools and goes today to work with pre-service physics teachers at Universidad del Bio-Bio. (By the way, Bio-Bio is a river.) Jeff Chorny and Jeremy Smith from the Notre Dame QuarkNet center will do similar cosmic ray measurements this weekend traveling south from South Bend so we can compare results in the two hemispheres. By the way, it is autumn here and as we go south it gets cooler. But you knew that.

Notre Dame grad student Rodolfo Capdevilla helps students in Chillan, Chile with the World Wide Data Day measurement.

News from QuarkNet Central

QuarkNet continues to gear up for the summer. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your mentor, Shane or Ken or both of them.

Physics Experiment Roundup

In particle physics, FCC does not refer to broadcast licenses or frequeny allocations but to the Future Circular Colliders conference, featured in CERN Bulletin. Read up on the ideas for accelerators of the future. In Fermilab News, we learn of new discoveries in nuclear physics, courtesy of the muon neutrino.

So we've found the Higgs. Now what? How about using the Higgs to probe for new physics, as described in symmetry? Also in symmetry: machine evolutionand by machine we mean accelerator.

Just for Fun

FF traveled this week with video blogger Ricardo Garcia on the road in Chile. Want to practice Spanish with physics masterclasses? Check out his video on masterclasses in Santiago. For a little less challenge and a little more expansion of the universe, English subtitles are available for his documentary, Accelerated Expansion
