University of Washington QuarkNet Center Annual Report 2019

Mentor: Prof. Shih-Chieh Hsu  Co-mentor: Dr. Gordon Watts, Dr. Henry Lubatti

We organized two successful activities in 2019. The 1-day masterclass in March, 1-day LHC Engineering Discovery Days.

CMS Masterclass (Apr 6 2019)

There are 11 students and 2 teachers from Interlake High (8 led by Michael P O'Byrne), Stadium High (3 led by Tseveldorj Oyuntugs). Both teachers conducted activities in the school before the masterclass. Students were well prepared and we had amazing progress on analyzing most of the data. Active discussions were guided during the event.

2 graduate students and 6 undergraduates organized a LHC proton smashing booth during the UW Engineering Discovery days in the UW Seattle campus. An exciting ATLAS LEGO was assembled as a spotlight of this event. Hundreds of students ranged from age of 6 to 16 visited the booth to learn how protons are accelerated and debris are detected using one of the most sophisticated instruments in the world. Activities including table games, particle physics interactive on-line games and introduction of sub-detectors represented by the LEGO.
