A 2-Day Template for QuarkNet Centers

Workshop Goals

  • Navigate and use the Data Activities Portfolio (DAP) activities in both "student mode" and "teacher mode."
  • Connect particle physics concepts (Momentum, Mass, Energy, etc.) to standard high school curriculum.
  • Develop a customized Implementation Plan for the upcoming school year.
Day 1: Introduction & Exploration

09:00 AMIntroductions & Opening SessionIntros, sign-in, registration, coffee. Updates from QuarkNet staff. Discuss upcoming (optional) Share-A-Thon
09:15 AMLevel 0/1 DAP ActivityFacilitator leads participants through an introductory activity such as Shuffling the Deck or Mass of U.S. Pennies. Focus on patterns and/or histograms. Begin with participants in "student mode", end with "teacher mode" discussion.
10:15 AMExplore the DAPFacilitator provides a guided tour of the DAP, highlighting the search features and supporting resources for each activity. Participants have time to explore the DAP on their own as well.
11:00 AMPhysicist InteractionTalk or Lab Tour
12:00 PMLunchInformal networking and discussion.
01:00 PMBreak-Out Session 1: DAP ActivityParticipants form groups based on interest around a particular activity (or activities). Time is provided to read through/do activity, and discuss implementation possibilities. Each group prepares a short informal presentation that will describe the activity to others, and discuss potential classroom implementation.

Each group presents from Break-Out Session 1. Q&A time is included.

11:15 AMBreak-Out Session 2: DAP Activity (begin)Participants form groups based on interest around a particular activity (or activities). Time is provided to read through/do activity, and discuss implementation possibilities. Each group prepares a short informal presentation that will describe the activity to others, and discuss potential classroom implementation. 
12:00 PMLunchGroup photo and break.
01:00 PMBreak-Out Session 2: DAP Activity (finish) and presentationsFinish Break-Out session from before lunch. Include time for each group to present from Break-Out Session 2. Q&A time is included.
02:30 PMImplementation PlanningIndividual/Small group work: Drafting a concrete plan for the school year.
