Pilot AI4QN Unworkshop
Purpose: In this (un)workshop, QuarkNet teachers, mentors, and staff together explore ways to make available Artificial Intelligence tools work for the classroom and professional development. We will draw on out experiences, brainstorm, try things, and iterate. A work product at the end is desirable if practical but not required.
Tentative Learning Goals:
- Explain in layman's terms what Machine Learning is.
- Explain how particle physics research uses Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and contributes to their development.
- Create a list of benefits of and problems with AI in the classroom.
One-day flexible agenda
Suggested time | Activity | Comments |
09:00 | Coffee, registration, chat, QN "housekeeping"
09:15 | AI Hopes and fears | Discuss in small groups, put on wall with post-it notes. Address during the day. |
10:15 | Faculty presentation on Machine Learning and AI
11:00 | Break | |
11:15 | Try it: play with an AI tool - no agenda | Work in pairs. Try ChatGPT, Grok, whatever. Have some fun. Try different prompts. |
11:45 | Brainstorn: How can we use this thing? | Whole group |
12:15 | Lunch | Pineapple on pizza disallowed. |
13:15 | After the brainstorm: pick a project to work on. | Related to particle physics or any physics in school would be nice...but not required. Maybe you have a better idea? Math? Other stuff? Make small groups if you can. |
13:45 | Project work | |
15:00 | Break | |
15:15 | Discussion | What do we know now? Has the day affected our hopes and fears? What's next? |
16:00 | That's all I've got for today. | Go away now. |
