The Vanderbilt QuarkNet Center has an active cosmic ray research program as well as week-long summer workshops under the leadership of mentor Bill Gabella.
Description
Nashville area QuarkNet teachers working on cosmic ray and particle physics.
Annual Report 2022 - Vanderbilt University

Synopsis of the years activities and QuarkNet personnel, mostly this is the maintaining and lending of Cosmic Ray Muon Detectors to teachers and the week-long workshop in the summer. This year the workshop was the week of 20-24 June 2022 and in-person. The attendance was poor (3 people) for the 5-day workshop, so a second 1-day workshop was organized on 27 July 2022 and was attended by 10 people, several new to the program. Bill Gabella hosted the meetings and Ken Cecire and Jeremy Wegner visited and helped, as did Nick Spurlock a graduate student.
Vanderbilt Summer Meeting 2022

Overall plan for the week
- Mon 20 June - talks
- Tue 21 June - using the CRMDs, speed of muons, maybe analyze "muon decay data" already collected
- Wed 22 June - Higgs@10 (see below)
- Thu 23 June - CRMDs, analyzing triangle pulses, looking at the GPS raw , DAQ board
- Fri 24 June - spillover from previous days, administration, de-brief, fun activities outside

Personnel
The Vanderbilt University QuarkNET group is mentored by William (Bill) Gabella, which much help from emeritus mentor Medford Webster and a volunteer teacher Terry King. We advise the teachers and students on the use of the Cosmic Ray Muon Detectors (CRMDs), we maintain them, and we help with either setup of our loaned out CRMDs or with those that are permanently at the school. We also host the 5 day summer workshop for the teachers.
