Insights into Research

July 9-10, 2015
Maximum of 20 participants
Stipend of $100 per day
Held at Waubonsee Community College

Join 2 CMS scientists and 2 QuarkNet teacher fellows to experience first hand the research and discovery process. You will see it’s not straight forward. It’s not just that the answer is not known, but the process to get there is sometimes not known, usually ill defined, and often messy.

You will use actual data from the CMS detector at CERN’s LHC to re-discover elementary particles W, Z, and the newly discovered Higgs boson. Activities from the QuarkNet Data portfolio, developed by teachers and tested in classrooms, bring out concepts covered in the data activities. After this workshop, you will be ready to provide a similar experience for your students.

This workshop is jointly run by Dr. Harry Cheung (Fermilab) and Dr. Pratima Jindal (Waubonsee). It is funded by an NSF outreach and education grant awarded to USCMS. We are working together with the Fermilab Education Office and QuarkNet Program to benefit from their experience in similar workshops and in developing educational material.

Please send email to cheung@fnal.gov for more information. The 2015 workshop is now full, we cannot take more registrations.

Objectives

Participating teachers:

  • Apply introductory physics to successfully complete data investigations
  • Create, interpret and explain the meaning of data plots or representations from CMS
  • Select an activity and develop a plan to implement it with students.
