Spotlight on the Colorado State University QuarkNet Center
Located along the Colorado Front Range in Fort Collin, this center just completed its sixth year in QuarkNet. Led by lead teachers Cherie Bornhorst, Zach Armstrong, and Adam Pearlstein, along with mentor Bob Wilson, this summer's workshop came in two parts: a two-day CMS e-Lab workshop in which teachers explored the new CMS e-Lab, and a field trip to DUNE at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota. Though last spring this center was unable to hold its masterclass at CSU due to a snow storm (second year in a row!), this didn't stop teachers Chris Nichols and Roger Felch from holding the masterclass at their high school with 30 students participating!
Friday Flyer on Monday - October 2, 2017
We were unable to publish Friday due to a schedule conflict so here we are on Monday. As for events to which we awoke today, we have no words. We hope the Friday Flyer on Monday will be of some small help on a difficult day.
Spotlight on the Boston Area QuarkNet Center
The Boston center meets periodically during the school year and then has a two- to three-day summer meeting, usually in August. This past year, they started off on a chilly November day discussing truth, science, and (a bit) the U.S. Constitution, moved on to masterclasses, and then took up dark matter in May. The Boston center finished in August with a two-day workshop in which they examined the astronomical evidence for dark matter and dark energy. It is not surprising that the discussion ranged from the historical to the cutting edge in the Boston center; it is one of the original 1999 QuarkNet centers with a great group of teachers, three QuarkNet fellows, and three great mentors from two top universities.
QuarkNet at Fermilab Open House, September 23, 2017
QuarkNet contributed two exhibits to the Fermilab Open House. Mark Adams designed a cosmic ray exhibit in which visitors could help take data for an azimuthal angle experiment. Rolling with Rutherford was out in force as well, taking data from 5-roll runs made by physicists of all ages - if you could reach the table, you could contribute to the experiment.

Spotlight on: the University at Buffalo QuarkNet Center
This center held its 11th annual summer workshop for teachers this August, with six teachers in attendance. Professors Ia Iashvili and Avto Kharchilava organized the three-day workshop, beginning with a day of updates from LIGO and the LHC, followed by a two-day CMS e-Lab workshop. Teachers worked through several Data Portfolio activities, learned how the CMS detector works, then analyzed data using the new and improved CMS e-Lab. In addition to the summer workshop, the Buffalo center hosted local students last spring for the CMS masterclass.
