  Greetings and introductions

  • Whip around for introductions. Who are you? Institution? Where are you from? What are you hoping to get out of this workshop?
  • What is QuarkNet? Who are your workshop facilitators?
~13:15

  Activity: Shuffling the Particle Deck
Muons are among the elementary particles that make up the Standard Model.

~13:45

Activity: Mean Lifetime Part 3: MINERvA (muon lifetime)
     Muons are short-lived particles...determine their half-life & mean lifetime.

Overview of a related activity: Mean Lifetime Part 2: Cosmic Muons
Does this muon lifetime measurement agree with the result from MINERvA?

Also: Mean Lifetime Part 1: Dice

~15:00

  BREAK
~15:15

  World Wide Data Day measurement
Muons used in a calibration measurement at the LHC.

Calculate the Z Mass - If time permits.
Muons used to find the mass of the Z boson.

~16:45

  Discussion

  • Tour of QuarkNet.org and Data Actvities Portfolio
  • What are your ideas for implementation?

Muon Activities in the Classroom
Code: W102F
Organizer: Shane Wood
Date: July 10
Time: 1:00 to 5:00 PM
Cost: $75 Member and $100 Non-member
Location: GVSU-Grand Rapids Campus

The moun—the electron’s heavier cousin—will be the star of this show as we dive into activities from the QuarkNet Data Activities Portfolio that feature this elementary particle. Learn how to engage your students in authentic scientific investigations with data from CERN, Fermilab, and cosmic ray muon detectors. In addition, you will find out how these activities connect to the standards and content you teach in your introductory physics courses as you discuss classroom implementation with other participants. Please bring a laptop with you to this workshop.
