The OSU QuarkNet Center works together on ATLAS physics, international masterclasses, and collaboration with the University of Oklahoma in QuarkNet.

Description

QuarkNet teachers from Oklahoma gather to explore particle physics, cosmic rays, and physics pedagogy.

After a hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, Masterclasses were back in 2022.  This spring OSU held two ATLAS Masterclasses, March 24 and April 30, with participants from three schools.  (And we have four events planned for 2023!).

2017 CMS e-Lab Workshop @ OU

Objectives

Participating teaches will be able to:

  • Identify particles colliding and emerging from collisions at the LHC from CMS data.
  • Interpret the physical meaning of plots created from CMS data in light of conservation rules (energy, momentum, charge).
  • Ask and answer questions about the physics of high energy collisions using CMS data. 

We will also provide opportunities to engage in critical dialogue among teaching colleagues about what they learn in the workshop.

  • Explain the importance of LIGO seismic data in gravitiational wave search

2015 Annual Report

Thanks for another great year of QuarkNet!

This year the summer workshop was hosted by OU.  A special thanks goes out to Mike Strauss for organizing the event and to all of the presenters.  Or course, it wouldn't be possible without the excellent teachers who attended.  I believe there were over 20 this year!  :-)

I look foreward to 2016!

 

2014 Annual Report - Oklahoma State

Thanks to everyone involved for making QuarkNet 2014 a success!  

QuarkNet 2014 gave some Oklahoma high school science teachers an inside look at the world of particle physics and some of the amazing research being done at OSU and OU.  The program included lectures, hands-on activities, and lab tours.  This year we also had the special treat of Ken Cercire visiting to lend a helping hand.  
 
The teachers learned about a range of topics in high energy physics in the lectures on Monday and Tuesday, including:
  • an overview of the experimental high energy physics program (photo);
  • an introduction to the Higgs boson and how it was discovered (slides);
  • an introduction to Symmersymmetry (photo);
  • neutrinos and their crazy ways.
Monday and Tuesday also featured tours of some of the experimental physics labs at OSU, including a laser lab (photo), radiation lab (photo), and biophysics lab.  Activities on Wednesday were hosted by OU, with a tour of the OU library and various physics labs, including the high energy physics facilities.  The teachers got their hands dirty on Thursday and Friday, looking at data from the ATLAS experiment and trying to identify various praticles produced in the collisions.
